We are thrilled to announce that BSc Information Management for Business alumna Sara Berkai has featured in this year’s BBC 100 Women list. Published annually, the list celebrates inspiring and influential women from around the globe and focuses on 5 key areas: climate pioneers, culture and education, entertainment and sport, politics and advocacy, and science, health and technology. This year’s theme focuses on resilience and celebrates the women who are pushing for change.
After graduating from our IMB programme in 2018, Sara launched Ambessa Play, a social enterprise creating toy kits and workshops for children (aged 3-15) globally where, for every kit or workshop purchased, a disadvantaged child with low STEM capital receives one for free. Sara came up with the concept whilst teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) workshops to displaced children in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Since launching Ambessa Play, Sara has received Innovate UK’s Women in Innovation award, featured in the 2024 Universities UK’s 100 Faces Campaign, and has now been listed in the science, health and tech category of the BBC’s 100 Women list. Talking to the BBC, Sara provides her definition of resilience and what this means for her. Ultimately, she notes, ‘resilience is optimism in practice - a steadfast commitment to a better future, rooted in love.’
In good company, Sara appears on the BBC list among other notable women from around the globe, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad, astronaut Sunita Williams and artist Tracey Emin.
