UCL SoM alumnus secures $20 million investment for tech start-up SurrealDB

UCL School of Management alumnus Tobie Morgan Hitchcock has raised a staggering $20 million for his tech start-up SurrealDB in a recent round of funding. SurrealDB is an innovative online database platform offering a multi-model system that helps organisations to consolidate data across a number of different databases and data platforms. An open source and free to use service, SurrealDB provides a serverless business model for modern applications.

The investment round was led by FirstMark and Georgian with participation and support from Crew Capital and Alumni Ventures. For SurrealDB, this funding is crucial for supporting the organisation’s vision of faster scaling and meeting rapidly growing customer demands for their database services. In total, SurrealDB have received an incredible $26 million in investment. 

Tobie graduated from UCL School of Management’s BSc Information Management for Business programme in 2010 and co-founded SurrealDB alongside Jaime Morgan Hitchcock in 2022. In less than two years, the business has seen phenomenal growth, and was recently featured in the Redpoint InfraRed 100 list, an annual list honouring the top 100 transformative companies in cloud infrastructure. Companies featuring in the list are recognised as trailblazers setting new benchmarks for reliability, scalability security and innovation.
