This seminar will provide you with an overview of the different projects that the presenter has worked on  and how they all helped to understand the main question of research: “What drives people to have negative interpersonal relationships?” An overview will be given on how one structural component of groups, social hierarchy, has negative implications for the interpersonal relationships between people within that group. The presenter would like to engage you in an in-depth discussion of a paper, which gets at a behavioural antecedent, self-regulating behaviors, of negative interpersonal relationships. This paper shows that the self-regulating behaviour of surface acting at work decreases the well-being of one’s spouse, including their health and satisfaction with the relationship and increases to their cheating behaviour.The presenter would like to convince you that to avoid negative interpersonal relationships,  show your true (emotional) colours and treat others as equals.
