Susan Smith

Biography
Susan Smith is Deputy Director (Student Experience) and a Professor of Accounting at UCL School of Management. Susan is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and holds a PhD in Accounting from the University of Sussex. She is a National Teaching Fellow (2022) and a Principal Fellow of Advance HE. She was awarded these fellowships in recognition of her work to enhance the student experience.
Susan is currently the Chair of the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies (CCAB) Ethics Committee is a member of the ICAEW Education and Training Board. Before becoming an academic, Susan worked in various roles in practice and industry, including as a Director at FitchRatings.
Susan is the founder of the Accounting Streams project alongside Professor Richard Murphy (University of Sheffield) and Jenni Rose (University of Manchester). The project seeks to innovate the accounting curriculum by developing a digital-first open-access text and supporting resources. Susan is currently Chair of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) Committee of Departments of Accounting and Finance (CDAF) group and has recently become a member of the European Accountiing Association (EAA) Education Committee.
She was the Deputy Chair of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) 2025 subject benchmark statement for Finance. She has also acted as an EFMD programme reviewer and external examiner to several Universities.
Susan serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Perspectives in Applied Academic Practice, as a UKAT trustee, and on the UKCISA Audit and Risk Committee.
