Exploring Strategy is one of the world’s oldest, most widely used and influential strategy textbooks, selling over 1.25m copies and for the past three decades has been a mainstay for undergraduate, postgraduate and executive education students alike.

Professor Duncan Angwin who is Director of Executive Education at UCL School of Management, has co-authored the 14th edition alongside longstanding co-authors Richard Whittington, Patrick Regnér, Julia Hautz, Gerry Johnson and Kevan Scholes.

Published by Pearson and described by the Financial Times as “the most influential strategy textbook in the world”, the updates the text to reflect some of the most pressing challenges facing organisations today, including artificial intelligence, sustainability and open strategy.

Professor Angwin said the latest edition places particular emphasis on ensuring students can connect established strategic theories with the realities facing modern organisations:

“In this edition, we’ve brought strategy right up to date with the challenges and opportunities we see in today’s world.

“We’ve included new and expanded content on AI, sustainability and open strategy, alongside practical guidance on how businesses can use AI in their strategising. We also provide support for students to use AI tools effectively and appropriately.”

He added: “Our aim is simple: to help students connect theory to practice, using real examples that reflect the complexity of modern strategy.”

The new edition incorporates 30 new or updated case studies drawn from organisations around the world and places greater emphasis on sustainability throughout the strategy process. It also retains the pedagogical features that have made the textbook a staple of strategy teaching, including practical questions, real-world illustrations and critical thinking exercises.

Professor Angwin, whose research focuses on strategic management and mergers and acquisitions, is one of Europe’s most published scholars in the M&A field. He is a Consulting Editor at Long Range Planning and has served on the editorial boards of a number of leading management journals. He is also a founding member of The European M&A Institute and has played an active role in the Strategic Management Society, where he has been recognised as a Friend of the Society.
