Mrityunjay Sharma joins United Nations to tackle extreme heat in cities

MSc Entrepreneurship student Mrityunjay Sharma is set to join the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), where he will play a pivotal role in tackling one of today’s most urgent climate challenges: extreme urban heat.

The work of UNEP forms part of the Cool Coalition, a landmark global initiative endorsed by more than 80 countries following the success of the Montreal Protocol in addressing ozone depletion. India is the first focus country, with interventions set to expand globally in the years ahead. With rising heatwaves in London and across the UK, the issue is becoming increasingly relevant worldwide.

Reflecting on the achievement, Mrityunjay credited UCL School of Management’s MSc Entrepreneurship programme and the UK Government’s Chevening Award as crucial in preparing for this opportunity. Discussing key takeaways from the MSc Entrepreneurship programme, he applied the “show, not tell” principle to his UNEP interview and created a live demo, drawing on knowledge from modules in Product Management and AI for Business. This innovative approach was singled out as a key strength by his recruiter and manager.

Beyond the classroom, Mritunjay also served as Faculty Representative for UCL Engineering and the MSc Entrepreneurship programme, an experience that helped him to develop leadership, empathy, and a global outlook. He also expressed gratitude to Programme Director Simon Hulme, who not only provided academic mentorship throughout his time at the School, but also helped to connect students with London’s diverse international ecosystem.

Discussing his next steps, Mrityunjay said: “This achievement reflects not just my personal journey, but also the strength of UCL School of Management’s teaching, community, and focus on real-world impact.”
