On Friday 4 September the Accounting Streams project held its third annual workshop for accounting educators at UCL School of Management. The event marked the launch of a new companion workbook - From Transactions to Financial Statements.
The workbook, written by UCL’s Professor Susan Smith and Dr Roshan Rakeeb, supports the Principles of Accounting Textbook providing guided practice questions for students. Participants also heard about the upcoming publication, Grand Challenges- Accounting as a Solution from Professor Jim Haslam and Dr Mengyuan Feng.
The day featured a keynote from Professor Karen McBride Shaping the Future Through the Past: Why Accounting History Matters in Accounting Education. This reminded attendees that concepts don’t just appear, they are shaped by the past. For example, artificial intelligence raises similar trust issues to auditing. Context matters in accounting and it is not simply a technical discipline.
The afternoon consisted of a design sprint AI, Ethics and Accounting Judgement: Designing Learning for Responsible Decision-Makers, led by Professors Susan Smith and Jenni Rose.
Professor Chris Cowton led the introduction framing the ethical tensions through the lens of the ‘last chicken’ example. Participants then selected a challenge and worked together to develop learning resources, ably assisted by student facilitators from UCL, the University of Edinburgh and Kingston University.
Accounting Streams continues to grow and now has users in over 142 countries and over 96,000 interactions since its launch. Developed by an international community of academics, led by Professor Susan Smith and Professor Jenni Rose, its accounting resources are free and open access. Educators can also sign up to the Accounting Streams Instructor Centre for access to additional teaching materials.
