Before beginning his Master’s degree at the UCL School of Management, MSc Business Analytics alumnus Yu-Hsien (Jason) Wu was already fascinated by the potential of consumer data to shape business decisions and improve user experiences. After facing multiple rejections for his final-term dissertation project, Jason’s journey took a dramatic turn when Experian - one of the world’s leading credit data companies - accepted his proposal through the Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC) pathway. During his time with Experian, Jason investigated how real-time credit data reporting could enhance lending decisions and improve consumer outcomes in the UK. His findings offered valuable insights into how timelier data could support fairer lending practices, aligning with regulatory goals and industry needs. Chris Wheeler, Data Analyst at Experian, praised Jason’s focus and methodology, noting the project’s contribution to Experian’s mission and its potential to inform future developments.

Predicting Churn: How Data Transformed Guinea Mobile’s Growth

After graduating from UCL School of Management in 2016, entrepreneur Victor Dyrnes co-founded Guinea Mobile, a Latin American-based technology startup specialising in telecommunications services. Today, the company serves over 100,000 mobile subscribers and B2B clients across the region. Like many operators, Guinea Mobile faced a critical challenge: reducing customer attrition - more commonly known in the industry as churn. To explore how data could provide solutions, the company partnered with an MSc Business Analytics student for their dissertation project. What followed far exceeded expectations: not only did the collaboration deliver a powerful predictive model, but it also generated real, measurable and lasting results for Guinea Mobile.

After graduating from UCL School of Management’s MSc Entrepreneurship programme in 2021, Aliaksandr Kazhamiakin and Altynay Ashimbayeva launched Yotewo, an online platform revolutionising tech recruitment through connecting businesses of all sizes with experienced tech professionals. Since its conception, Yotewo has seen incredible growth and recently secured a £250,000 investment from London-based VC Symvan Capital. Students evaluated communications campaigns and developed strategic digital marketing recommendations, presenting their analyses in video format. Seven submissions were shortlisted, and winners were chosen by industry experts Brian Cheung of TikTok and Jessica Cooke of Stonegate Group for the Most Creative and Visually Impactful Video Presentation and the Most Insightful Research and Value-adding Recommendations.

In partnership with Tecno International, UCL School of Management recently hosted the inaugural Pitch Day of the UCL SoM SustainTech Pitching Competition. Our finalists pitched their ground-breaking startup ideas to a panel of experts and competed for one of three prizes: Best Pitch, Best Idea, and Audience Choice Award. Taking home the Best Pitch Award were BioBright, who impressed the judges with their innovative algae solutions. In 2022, BSc Information Management for Business graduate, Anastasiia Nedoluha founded her own business Leleka, a not-for-profit platform that connects Ukrainian businesses and foreign clients. Shortly after she founded the company the devasting war in Ukraine began. Despite decades of progress, women are still severely underrepresented in numerous professions around the globe. In the UK, women represent less than 13% of engineers. Among British firefighters, women are an even smaller minority at less than 7%. For women entering these professions, their underrepresentation can mean facing chronic scepticism and exclusion. Having spent several months studying at University College London, I feel obliged to give the world an update on how UCL truly is. Aside from providing a vast experience, I was surprised to see the level of diversity in the student community. I have never seen such diversity in one area, and did not expect to learn so much from students that represent 80 different countries. In fact, some students are seen working 12-13 hours after class, to deliver their very best in coursework and projects. If that does not count as immense dedication, I don’t know what does!
